Melanie Backwell

Mental Health Social Worker

Melanie understands that the transition to motherhood can bring a complex mix of emotions, challenges and changes that can sometimes feel difficult to navigate. She is an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker with over 12 years of experience in the mental health field and is passionate about supporting women through the different stages of their journey to and through motherhood.

Melanie has a particular interest in working with women experiencing infertility, pregnancy loss, birth trauma and the transition to parenthood. She also supports new parents as they adjust to family life, navigate changes in their relationships and develop confidence in their parenting.

Melanie brings a warm, compassionate and trauma-informed approach to therapy. She creates a space where clients can slow down, make sense of their experiences and feel supported through periods of significant change.

Melanie is a trained EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) clinician and incorporates this evidence-based approach when appropriate to support clients working through trauma, anxiety, grief, infertility, pregnancy loss and other difficult experiences.

Melanie holds a Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) and a Master of Social Work from Deakin University. She is also undertaking individual training in Gottman’s Bringing Baby Home program, complementing her work with women, couples and families during the transition to parenthood.
